We often have BBC breakfast news on in the kitchen in a morning – it breaks the silence or the occasional grunts from 2 Teenage boys!
My ears pricked up when a scientist was being interviewed about burnt toast and over cooked roasties…did you see it?
Actually, if you didn’t SEE it , you most probably read or heard about it at some point during the day – it was all over the place!😉
Browned toast and potatoes are a 'potential cancer risk'
According to these scientists, bread, chips and potatoes should be cooked to a golden yellow colour, rather than brown, to reduce our intake of a chemical which could cause cancer, government food scientists are warning.
Further reading of this article online, stated that:
"Research in animals has shown that the chemical is toxic to DNA and causes cancer - so scientists assume the same is true in people, although as yet there is no conclusive evidence".
"And that adults would need to consume 160 times as much to reach a level that might cause increased tumours in mice".

Should we now change our toast and spud habits?
I wouldn't rush. But I would look at some other far more proven causes of Cancer and address those first.
Smoking – Responsible for 1:5 cancer deaths worldwide
Exposure to certain chemicals like vinyl chloride, arsenic, micotine and acrylamide have been reported to cause the uncontrollable growth of abnormal human cells causing some cancers.
Diet A diet low in fibre and high in salt can cause several types of cancer. A low fibre diet typically involves fewer vegetables, fruits and whole grains, and more of processed foods and red meats
Pesticides and insecticides: These chemicals are sprayed on vegetables and fruits. Consumption of these produces without washing them thoroughly can lead to stomach cancer.
Trans fatty acids: These unhealthy fats are present in most of the fried food items and are believed to be encourage the growth of abnormal cells in the body.
Low physical activity: Less physical activity does not only lead to obesity, but also has a negative impact on the immune and the endocrine systems. Low level of physical activities coupled with unhealthy diet, can cause cancer.
Plus radiation, infections and hereditary factors.
I feel that there was a missed opportunity here.
I agree, Open the day with a story that makes us sit up and pause....
But the whole day turned into a discussion as to whether we yet again live in a Nanny State?
It could have been a great platform to simply drive a super important message home.
Do the things consistently that WILL make a difference to your health!
Don't focus on the tiny detail.
Yes, the challenge to stop smoking, take more regular exercise and eat more whole unprocessed foods is not a sexy story.
But neither is cancer.
Bye for now
